What’s needed to accelerate IoT Adoption: Connectivity, Security and Scale
The IoT is out of the over-hyped phase and in adoption. Three key challenges are holding back faster adoption. They are first, the basic connectivity to devices and data that make up the foundation of the Industrie4.0 value chain; second, robust security to protect the devices and applications; and third, scalability to overcome the complexity of the IoT and to prepare for the amount of devices and data to be processed.
We will review trends in all three of these areas that will be critical in accelerating the adoption of IoT in industrial ecosystem. TSN, IPv6, precise time and converged industrial application protocols are making sensor to cloud connectivity real. Software-define, Intent-based networking, cloud and edge computing and standardized device and data descriptions are helping scale through automation. Last, to make the IoT more secure, a cybersecurity framework (IEC 62443) and a host of technical capabilities aligned to the NIST Cybersecurity model are available.
